So, if you are like me, you get these annoying emails from Apple, Microsoft, PayPal, etc. (the list goes on) and the emails read something like this:

  • your account needs updating

  • your account is being used at IP address xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx in Germany

  • It's time to change your password on the account

The truth is, what the emails really says is this:

Go ahead sucker and click on this link, log in and we just hacked your account!

The question is, "How can I avoid this scenario happening to me?" Here is a short list of some quick ways to avoid being scammed:

  • Never log into a site with a username and password from an email link you did not initiate

  • Hover over the email address and the link in the email (usually these are pretty easy to tell they are non-valid addresses or sites)

  • Check the spelling of the email. If there are misspelled words or bad grammar, chances are the email is SPAM

  • When in doubt, open the email on your mobile device. Mobile devices are less susceptible to virus and malware attacks

  • If the email and link looks valid, get a phone number of the company requesting your login information and call them to verify the request

Always remember, God gave you a brain....use it!
